- Summary
- This program describes the industrialization of society and its effects. As industrialization caused the replacement of skilled craftsmen by factory laborers, cities around the world had to deal with the effects of increasing populations and unfair labor practices. At the same time, dividends of progress such as labor-saving machines, affordable luxuries, and leisure time resulted in a higher standard of living for many. This program presents the challenges and opportunities of urban centers during the boom days of capitalism and the emergence of socialist economies, describing the slow and uneven transition from exploitation to equity, and from sweatshop survival to upward mobility.
