- Summary
- Suite of 10 etchings illustrating Les Châtiments by Victor Hugo. Each print is present in 2 impressions, printed on different papers. Subjects, many of them allegorical, relate to the Napoleonic Wars, the Revolution of 1848 and the coup d'état of 1851 and include representations of a barricade, executions (including a man hanging from a gallows), ghosts, rain, sheep, skeletons and storms. One print depicts Victor Hugo in exile on the island of Guernsey.
