- Description
- 1 videocassette (27 min.) : sd., b&w NTSC; 1/2 in. (VHS)
- Summary
- Discussion and demonstration of the function of the ballerina, and the various technical and artistic demands she must meet. To illustrate these points, Marjorie Tallchief, partnered by James Clouser, performs excerpts from Swan lake, Giselle, The sleeping beauty, and The nutcracker, as well as George Balanchine's Night shadow and Alvin Ailey's Ariadne. Contrasting entrances from different ballets depict the dramatic range required of the ballerina. Tallchief demonstrates how the step called pas de bourrée and movements of the arms (port de bras) are used for different expressive purposes, and displays the ballerina's mastery of pantomime and phrasing. With Clouser she demonstrates different examples of partnering. The program closes with a complete performance, in costume, of the pas de deux Clair de lune, choreographed by George Skibine to music by Claude Debussy.
