Summary
Documentary on the 1999 Prix de Lausanne, an international competition for young dancers. The program highlights the introduction of a new system requiring the entrants to perform, in addition to the customary classical variation, a contemporary variation selected from works commissioned from five choreographers. The entrants are seen rehearsing with choreographers Pierre Wyss, Aimé de Lignière, and Michèle Mengual. Also depicted are rehearsals with Monique Loudières and Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux, who respectively coached the women and men in classical variations. In interviews, the choreographers and coaches discuss the aims of the competition and their observations of the entrants ; Wyss and Foofwa d'Imobilité also discuss the task of the jury. In turn, entrants describe their experiences at the competition. Variations seen in rehearsal footage include Wyss's Roof top action and Equus ; de Lignière's Winter was hard ; Mengual's Période jurassique II: Bambou ; classical variations from Giselle, The sleeping beauty, and Don Quixote ; and examples of "free variations," chosen by the entrants and their teachers. A montage filmed at the final round at the Théâtre Beaulieu depicts prizewinners Clara Blanco Casquete, Kate Cornish, Rainer Krenstetter, Karina Sarkissova, Laetitia Guggi, Rina Kambe, Shumpei Nemoto, David Karapetian, Kenta Kojiri, and Pierre Pontvianne.
