  • Cassette 1. Martha Myers (ca. 9 min.) / interviewed by Linda Tarnay. Myers discusses her discovery that dance could be used for serious purposes ; her approach to teaching choreography ; her workshops for professional choreographers ; her interest in body therapies and dance medicine.
  • Beverly Blossom (ca. 9 min.) / interviewed by Linda Tarnay. Blossom discusses her use of life experience as a source for her work ; how her own choreography took the opposite direction from that of Alwin Nikolais, with whom she had danced ; collaborating with Roberts Blossom on mixed-media works ; choreographing for students at the University of Illinois ; her current choreography.
  • Janaki Patrik (ca. 8 min.) / interviewed by Linda Tarnay. Patrik examines some of the relationships she has found between the Eastern and Western components of her life and art: Unitarianism and Hinduism, Cunningham technique and Indian dance, the oral tradition of Kathak dance and her interest in Russian poetry. She discusses her goal of making Kathak more accessible to American audiences, and gives examples of the power of gesture, drawn from her experiences as performer and teacher.
  • Wendell Beavers (ca. 9 min.) / interviewed by Linda Tarnay. Beavers recalls two influential teachers, Jean Hamilton, a former member of the Pavlova company, and Bonnie Cohen. He discusses his dance activities at the New School for Social Research ; dancing with Lucinda Childs ; finding his own choreographic voice ; his current explorations of developmental movement and experiential anatomy.
  • Nai-Ni Chen (ca. 6 min.) / interviewed by Linda Tarnay. Chen recalls influential teachers, among them Lin Hwai-min, director of Cloud Gate Dance Theater, which she joined at age 16. She discusses her view of traditional Chinese dance and American modern dance as parallel elements in her work, and describes pursuing this vision in New York City.
  • Blossom Leilani (ca. 15 min.) / interviewed by Pat Catterson. Leilani describes the experience of moving from Hawaii to New York City to study dance, and making the transition from student to professional dancer. She discusses studying the Pilates method with Cathy Grant ; her perceptions of the goals of the younger generation of dancers ; her jobs as bartender and flower arranger ; studying dance with Earnest Morgan in Hawaii.

Rainer discusses the spirit of creative ferment surrounding the many artistic experiments at Judson Memorial Church in the 1960s ; the roots of the improvisational group Grand Union in her piece Continuous project - altered daily ; her visit to India, which fostered her interest in narrative ; her turn to filmmaking ; her return to dance with revivals of her work Trio A, and her collaboration with Mikhail Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project ; her current experimentation with a collagist approach.

Mei discusses her practice of martial arts as well as dance ; the movement qualities she tries to incorporate into her choreography ; the inspiration of Clay Taliaferro ; her motion graphics and interactive design firm, which helps finance her dance activities ; the current trend towards performance art.

La Conja discusses her experiences in studying and performing in Spain ; the innovations in flamenco dancing introduced by Antonio Canales and Mario Maya ; the working relationship of dancer, singer, and guitarist in flamenco ; the demands of having her own company ; her interest in fusion, leading to collaborations with Bharata natyam and Egyptian dancers, and jazz musicians ; the respect accorded to mature dancers in flamenco ; her activities and plans as cultural director of the Centro Español in New York.

Alenikoff discusses her studies at the Katherine Dunham school ; choreographing for her own company in Mexico ; studying choreography with Doris Humphrey (who became her mentor) and Anna Sokolow ; participating in the New York dance scene of the 1960s, including performances with ChoreoConcerts and Jeff Duncan's Dance Theater Workshop ; the different phases of her creative life ; the changes she sees in today's dance world.

Zimmer discusses her studies of dance and writing at Bennington College ; her longstanding and continuing interest in contact improvisation, both as participant and observer ; her concerns as a dance critic for the Village Voice ; her editing of the book Body against body, a collection of material on Bill T. Jones and Arnie Zane.
  • Tina Croll (ca. 9 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Croll recalls studying improvisation, then a new field, with Judith Dunn, and describes her own attitudes about improvisation. She and Cunningham discuss aspects of the Horse's mouth project, which they jointly conceived and organized: its future possibilities, the benefits it offers the dance community and general audiences, the problem of funding, its improvisational component.
  • Lynn Parkerson (ca. 23 min.) / interviewed by James Cunningham. Parkerson discusses the appeal of ballet, with special reference to Swan lake and George Balanchine's Concerto barocco ; her work as a dancer in Germany ; her use of a ballet aesthetic in her choreography ; her experience in the Horse's mouth project ; working with ballet dancers on improvisation ; Suzanne Farrell's dancing as an exception to the general lack of improvisational impulses in ballet dancers.
