Summary

Interview with Rudolf Nureyev, recorded during his engagement as the king of Siam in the musical The king and I. Much of the discussion focuses on his experiences of preparing, performing, and touring in the musical. He also discusses his childhood decision to become a dancer, against his father's opposition ; the qualities required of a great dancer ; his decision to leave the Soviet Union in 1961 ; his heroes in the dance world, particularly George Balanchine ; his preference for live performance over film ; his opinion of Mikhail Gorbachev and the policy of glasnost. He talks about the present transitory stage in his career, and the new types of performing challenges he hopes to take on. Responding to a question about the mixed reviews received by The king and I, he states his belief in transcending the media and having faith in his own gifts as a performer. This tape does not contain performance footage.
