Local Note
Berg Collection copy bound in variant "b" binding, in gold card wrappers.
Berg Collection copy annotated after the writer’s death by his wife, Véra, in preparation for an English translation which never appeared. The form of the annotations is explained by an accompanying letter (typed letter, signed, Ap. 10, 1981, separately cataloged) sent with the book by Vera Nabokov to the publisher Matthew J Bruccoli at Bruccoli Clark Publishers in South Carolina. She promises to send this book to him: “a paperback copy of VN’s poems in Russian. I have marked all those that I would like to recommend for an English translation with a little cross in the text, and by circling the title page and in the table of contents.”
Berg Collection copy annotated by Véra Nabokov with a small pencil cross above the title of poems intended for inclusion in the new edition, with additional scattered emendations which are presumed to be editorial instructions (see Esche Bezmolvstvuiu and Finis). This pattern of emendation is repeated with additional instructions to the contents list at the rear of the volume. Her selection of poems reveals at least one omission from the printed Contents list which she correctly inserts in manuscript. Véra Nabokov’s cuts would have deleted about a quarter of these poems from the planned translation.
