- Summary
- Moving between the past and the present, this documentary examines the importance of dance and music in Cambodian culture, as demonstrated by the lives of Cambodian classical dancers both in Cambodia and the U.S. The dancers speak movingly of their suffering and losses during the regime of Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979), their accounts illustrated by archival footage and photographs. Dancers and scholars in both countries describe their work in reviving classical dance and retrieving or rebuilding its written records. Cambodian immigrants in American communities (particularly Lowell, Mass., and San Jose, Calif.) talk about their efforts to keep Cambodian dance and music alive in order to establish their cultural identity in their adopted country, and to transmit their heritage to their children. The perennial popularity of the monkey dance, exemplified by the character Hanuman in the Ramayana, is emphasized by several speakers. The program contains many scenes of dance classes, rehearsals and performances, both past and present-day, including footage filmed at the School of Dance at University of Fine Arts in Phnom Penh, and performances by the Angkor Dance Troupe, co-founded in Lowell by Tim Chan Thou and directed by Phousita Huy. In addition to classical or court dances, Cambodians in the U.S. are also seen in Cambodian social dances.
