  • Vol 1. (31 leaves): Interview with Dorothy La Salle, 04/05/80. Tape 1 (53 min.) Dorothy La Salle discusses her book, Play activities; teaching children movement; learning from teacher's observations; her education at Wayne State University; her work as a publisher; her efforts as part of a committee to develop a movement curriculum for children and the establishment of dance education as a system in the United States; the White House American Physical Education Association Conference; Barbara Mettler's work as a dance educator; getting her own certification as a teacher. La Salle's resume is included with the transcript as well as a description of master's and doctoral degrees in dance education.
  • Vol. 2 (31 leaves): Interview with Ruth Lovell Murray, 06/04/1980. Tape 2 (43 min.) Ruth Murray discusses the importance of dance for children and changes in dance education; Isadora Duncan's influence on dance education for children; Gertrude Colby; Teacher's College dance group; dancing with Doris Humphrey and Martha Hill; Dorothy La Salle's elementary dance committee and book, Dancing in elementary schools; her graduate experience during the 1930's; the process of writing her own book; problems and needs of children's dance education. Tape 4 - Flemming continues to discuss her writing about dance for children; her efforts to promote dance as an athletic movement art; the value and process of integrating dance in the classroom; her advice to young teachers; the developmental connection between movement and dance; the incorporation of dance in school curriculum; her influence and inspiration as a teacher of dance; combining community heritage lessons with movement and song; her concert, "From four to eighty-four."

Tape 5 - Barbara Mettler discusses her personal dance history; her studies at the Mary Wigman School in Dresden, Germany and subsequent return to New York City; the establishment of the Barbara Mettler Studios; the effect of the great depression on the dance community; her summer dance program in New Hampshire; her work developing a dance curriculum at Keuka College in New York and teaching dance at the Boston YWCA; the emphasis on original use of sound and improvisation in her teaching; her dance films Group dance improvisation, and A new direction in dance; her move to Arizona to start a year-round dance school; the limited jobs available teaching children dance within the public school system. Tape 6 - Mettler discusses the methods and philosophy of her approach to children's dance; she contrasts the perceptions of movement and art in adults and children; the importance of freedom in her teaching approach; she contrasts the terms movement vocabulary and movement language; she discusses changes in her teaching over the years; the importance of rhythm; the removal of stereotypical images and ideas from teaching movement to allow greater freedom and creative expression; her work teaching dance within the Navajo Indian Nation, Bureau of Indian Affairs and White River Apaches; Isadora Duncan's influence on dance education and on Mettler, herself.
