- Summary
- Documentary exploring the nature of the Argentine tango and milonga, and their place in Argentine life. Tango aficionados, both Argentinians and foreigners, comment upon the different varieties of tango (e.g., "street-smart" vs. ballroom), the different contexts in which they are danced (e.g., social settings, stage performances), and the qualities of the true Argentine tango as distinguished from the European or American tango. Also discussed are male-female relationships as expressed through the tango ; changes in the execution of the tango, and its possible extinction ; and adaptations of the tango by other dance forms, the last including performances by ballet dancers Vladimir Vasiliev and Julio Bocca. In addition to the many depictions of the tango or milonga, the program includes excerpts of the theatrical works Tango vitrola, choreographed by Alejandro Cervera ; A Buenos Aires, choreographed by Gustavo Mollajoli, and danced by Bocca and Raquel Rossetti ; and Piazzolla en concierto, choreographed by Julio Lopez, and danced by Bocca and Rossetti.
