Note
  • The first edition of this text. Published permissu praesidum, and edited apparently by Simon de Magistris, or A. Ricchinio.
  • The book of Daniel is one of the most paraphrastic and least satisfactory parts of the LXX. version. Perhaps on this account it fell into disfavor with the early Christian Church, and was replaced by the more literal version of Theodotion, who, probably in the second century A.D., endeavoured "to revise the LXX. version, by correcting its more serious deviations from the Hebrew." According to Jerome, in his preface to Daniel, Danielem prophetam, iuxta LXX. interpretes, Domini Salvatoris Ecclesiæ non legunt, utentes Theodotionis editione; et hoc cur acciderit, nescio...hoc unum affirmare possum, quod multum a veritate discordet, et recto iudicio repudiatus sit. No other part of Theodotion's version has been preserved in its integrity, except the book of Daniel, which in mss. of the LXX. displaces the true LXX. version. This latter actually remained unknown to scholars until it was published at Rome in 1772, from the only extant ms. which contains it. The ms. belongs to the library of the Chigi family, and hence is designated Codex Chisianus; it may date from the ninth century. It exhibits that recension of the LXX. which was based upon the text adopted by Origen for his Hexapla, some of whose characteristic obelisks and asterisks the ms. retains.
  • The Tetrapla mentioned in the title of the Roman edition of 1772 was simply a later form of the Hexapla with the first two columns omitted. Tischendorf's edition of the LXX. gives Theodotion's version of Daniel in the text, with the genuine LXX. version at the end of the volume. Swete's edition prints the two side by side on opposite pages.
  • Prefixed is a half-title, title, dedication to Clement XIV., table of contents, preface, Testimonia de Codice Chisiano, and approbations. Daniel juxta LXX cum adnotationibus cuique capitum subjectis, with Danielis chronologia; S. Hippolyti M. interpretario in Danielem; De titulo eis versionis Theodotioneæ dissertatio; and Daniel juxta Theodotionem, cum variis lectionibus præsertim ex Vaticano insigni codice; Comparatio versionis LXXviralis cum Theodotionea; Apologia sententiæ Patrum de LXXvirali versione (five dissertations); Testimonia Patrum, aliorumque veterum de LXXvirali versione; indexes.
  • The Greek is always accompanied by a Latin version. The section Apologia... includes Pars libri Esther Chaldaice, Græce, Latine; and a description of the library at Alexandria with a folding plan, etc.
  • Title page printed in red and black; vignette.
  • First part of title transliterated from Greek.
