- Summary
- Profile of British ballerina Alicia Markova, recorded on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Markova's own observations are supplemented by commentaries by her sister Doris Barry, colleagues, critics and fans. She looks back on her career, which she began as a very young member of Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes ; her tenure with the Vic-Wells Ballet in London after Diaghilev's death ; her partnership with Anton Dolin ; performances in the U.S. and other parts of the world ; and her retirement in 1963. Special emphasis is placed on her role in developing audiences for ballet through her extensive tours at a time when the art was little known. The program culminates with scenes from her 90th birthday tribute performance at Covent Garden on 16 March 2000, including an excerpt from the Royal Ballet's revival of Les rendezvous (created for her by Frederick Ashton in 1933) and a speech in her honor by Anthony Dowell, the company's director.
