"The earliest of the great Polyglots [containing Hebrew, Greek, Latin and Chaldee text]; known as the Complutensian, the Spanish, or Ximenes' Polyglot."--Brit. and foreign Bible soc. Historical cat., 1412.
The work was begun in 1502 but was not completed until fifteen years later. The New Testament, the first volume printed, has colophon dated 1514. The volume containing appendix was printed the next year, and v. 1-4, containing the Old Testament, were finished last, the colophon in v. 4 bearing date 1517. The Papal sanction, however, was not obtained until 1520, and the volumes were not circulated until 1522.

Local Note

There is no general title page; the title page to each volume bears the arms of Cardinal Ximenez, with Latin verses above and the title below. The cardinal's arms are printed in red except in New Testament volume. Each title page has a narrow ornamental border. In this copy the volume containing New Testament is numbered 6 on cover, while v. 5 contains appendix. Bound in dark purple morocco, with gilt edges.
