Summary
Vaslav Nijinsky's groundbreaking ballet L'après-midi d'un faune (Afternoon of a faun) (1912) serves as the departure point for a meditation on the ephemeral nature of dance and an exploration of the many methods that have been employed over the centuries to preserve it. The traditional method, direct transmission from dancer to dancer, is depicted in footage of a 1976 rehearsal in which Leonide Massine and Nijinsky's widow Romola work with Charles Jude of the Paris Opéra Ballet. Jude, in turn, passes along his knowledge to two dancers of the Opéra de Bordeaux, Omar Taiebi and Viviana Franciosi. Various systems of dance notation are surveyed, and Ann Hutchinson Guest discusses her reconstruction of Nijinsky's choreography from his own notation. Also examined are filmmaking, which was at a primitive stage of development in Nijinsky's heyday ; photography, particularly the photographs of Baron Adolf de Meyer ; and computer programs.
