Summary

• Cassette 1 10/31/2000. 80 min. Ms. Cohen discusses her family background as a Yemenite Jew in Israel, the context in which she began to dance; studying with choreographer Gertrud Kraus; her developing focus on dance; seeing the Martha Graham Dance Company perform; studying Graham technique with Rena Gluck in Israel; other choreographers with whom she worked in Israel; working with Anna Sokolow; auditioning for Jerome Robbins' Fiddler on the Roof; her admiration for Sokolow; her developing awareness of herself as a performer and accepting Sokolow's encouragement to come to New York; her experience in the Israeli army; coming to New York.

Studying at Juilliard; Sokolow's classes, working process, personal qualities and talents; performing at Lincoln Center's New York State Theater; associates at Juilliard who became important to her; the dance scene in NY during this period; working with James Waring; her association with Jeff Duncan and Dance Theater Workshop (DTW).

Ms. Cohen discusses others from whom she commissioned or learned solos including Rudy Perez, Elizabeth Keen, Phyllis Lamhut, Art Bauman, Viola Farber, Daniel Nagrin, and Richard Gibson; the influence of Gibson's teaching; Susan Buirge; auditioning for Joseph Papp and working on Mod Donna; Cohen's piece, Cloud Dance; her home at Westbeth; her piece Rainwood; her work with ballet companies; her choreographic process; running her own dance company; begins to discuss her work with Aleta Hayes.
• Cassette 5. Continuation of 11/8/2000. 25 min. Continues discussion of Aleta Hayes and the duet they developed together; the last decade at Princeton and her feelings about her position there; developments in the dance program.
