Description

Summary
Drama about aspiring young dancers at a fiercely competitive ballet school, the fictitious American Ballet Academy in New York City. In addition to scenes of ballet auditions, classes and rehearsals, the film depicts salsa dancing at a club and a jazz dance class. Performance excerpts include the Little swans' pas de quatre from Swan lake, choreographed by Lev Ivanov ; the balcony scene pas de deux from Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet, danced by Julie Kent and Ethan Stiefel ; the coda of the pas de deux from George Balanchine's Stars and stripes, danced by Kent and Stiefel ; and two original ballets, the first a neoclassical work "choreographed" by the character Jonathan Reeves [actually created by Christopher Wheeldon], and the second a contemporary piece by the character Cooper [actually Susan Stroman].
