- "Latino Visions celebrates the artwork of Chicanos (Mexican Americans), contemporary Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans in the United States. The book provides insights into the social, political, and cultural events and traditions that have helped to shape these artists and their work. The artists often reference their cultural histories and explore religious figures, historic traditions, and ancient symbols in their creations. Many of the artists also grapple with identity in their work--the feeling, as one artist describes it, of 'fitting neither here nor there.' For others, their work is to keep their culture alive, from recording a moment in everyday life to preserving a historic myth or symbol. Juan Sánchez incorporates cultural and religious symbols and challenges stereotypes into his work. Ana Mendieta explored the ancient past of the Taíno Indians using symbols and images from their culture in a series of cave paintings and sculptures in Cuba. Artistic groups, such as the Social and Public Art Resource Center and Artes Guadalupanos de Aztlán, have created numerous murals that celebrate Chicano life and depict local and global concerns. Latino Visions creates a mosaic with each artist's unique story, which collectively express much of the Chicano, Puerto Rican and Cuban American experience in the United States." -- Provided by publisher
