- Summary
- A new translation of a 19th Century novel on a non-conformist. The protagonist, conscientious and innovative, is disliked by the villagers, not just because his job as a dykemaster is to force them to keep the dyke sound, but because he is different. He refuses to engage in the sacrificial ritual of a dog to celebrate the completion of a dyke, prompting a rumor that he worships the devil. By a German writer.
