- Summary
- Cassette 1. 10/12/67 (10/17/67 segment begins on last minutes of side one). Martin discusses audience for modern dancers such as Isadora Duncan, Agna Enters, Sybil Shearer and Martha Graham; contrasts Graham's choreography with that of Ruth St. Denis; describes dancing in Germany in 1928 as well as costumes in Germany, France, and Russia during this period; contrasts the disappearance of the classical ballet style as represented by Anna Pavlova with the preservation of classical ballet technique; describes Sergei Grigor'ev's reconstructions of ballets such as Tamara and The firebird as substantially different from the originals; discusses Pavlova's constant touring and her failure to nurture talented dancers within her company. Martin discusses theater in U.S.S.R.; Helen Tamiris's manifesto on contemporary dance; views of ethnic dance performance by dancers not of that ethnicity; development and role of costumes in ballet and modern dance; dance notation as better means than film to preserve choreography: notation's limitations and potential.
