Summary
  • Cassette 1. 10/12/67 (10/17/67 segment begins on last minutes of side one). Martin discusses audience for modern dancers such as Isadora Duncan, Agna Enters, Sybil Shearer and Martha Graham; contrasts Graham's choreography with that of Ruth St. Denis; describes dancing in Germany in 1928 as well as costumes in Germany, France, and Russia during this period; contrasts the disappearance of the classical ballet style as represented by Anna Pavlova with the preservation of classical ballet technique; describes Sergei Grigor'ev's reconstructions of ballets such as Tamara and The firebird as substantially different from the originals; discusses Pavlova's constant touring and her failure to nurture talented dancers within her company. Martin discusses theater in U.S.S.R.; Helen Tamiris's manifesto on contemporary dance; views of ethnic dance performance by dancers not of that ethnicity; development and role of costumes in ballet and modern dance; dance notation as better means than film to preserve choreography: notation's limitations and potential.

Martin discusses relationship of technique and body types; modern trend toward slender and athletic dancers; relation of gender to choreography; Doris Humphrey's balance between conceptual and formal patterns in her work; Eugene Loring and the ballet Billy the Kid; influence of work created on the East coast on work in the West and Midwest; Martin's long, professional relationship with Martha Graham; the influence of Lincoln Kirstein, Erick Hawkins, and ballet on Graham's choreography; her solo work in the mid-1950s. Martin discusses Humphrey's working relationship with Charles Weidman; physical aspects of stages in New York City such as at the New School and the 16th Street theater; Humphrey's strength as choreographer rather than dancer as well as her musicality; her dance Pleasures of counterpoint. Martin contrasts modern dance in Berlin in early 1930s with German ballet; contrasts qualities between cities in northern and southern Germany; discusses the business-like approach of Berlin to the highly-specialized sex industry [begins discussion of concept of space; tape ends abruptly].
