Biography
William F. "Buffalo Bill" Cody (1846-1917), a onetime soldier, scout, and hunter turned entertainment entrepreneur, launched his Wild West Show in 1883. Although it was not the first such attraction, and it spawned many imitators, Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, a travelling extravaganza that dramatized frontier life, was a highly successful show business enterprise worldwide for some thirty years. Starting with the season of 1908-9, Cody joined forces with Gordon "Pawnee Bill" Lillie (1860-1942), impressario of Pawnee Bill's Great Far East, and the two shows toured jointly for several years as Cody made a number of "farewell" appearances. Financial difficulties forced the aging Buffalo Bill to continue performing almost up until his death in January 1917.
