This documentary begins with a general history of gumboot dancing in South Africa, exploring various theories about its origins, its growth among the gold miners, and its underlying themes and sociopolitical implications. The program then turns to the Gumboots company of the feature presentation, tracing it back to the dance classes organized for youths by Mrs. Maggie Makhudu in the wake of the Soweto uprising of 1976. Cast members, director Zenzi Mbuli, creative advisor Wayne Harrison, designer Nigel Triffitt, and others discuss the evolution of the company from street buskers to musical theater performers.
