Symposium. Dance as Liberation, Protest, Celebration and Affirmation. Nana Dinizulu, Joe Nash, Albert Opoku, and John Szwed. 4/21/83. [Recording begins mid-sentence.] Nash (ca. 5 min.) introduces the speakers. Dinizulu (ca. 12 min.) speaks about African dance using examples from Ghana; Szwed (ca. 13 minutes) speaks about African American street festivals and parades in North America and the Caribbean; Opoku (ca. 24 min.) speaks about dance in Africa using examples mainly from ethnic groups in Ghana including the Ashanti; question and answer session (ca. 5 min.; ends abruptly).

Sound quality: The cassettes from which the Dance Black America festival were preserved contain gaps, abrupt starts and stops, unrelated material, and material that is out of sequence. In addition, the audibility, especially of questions taken from the audience, is often poor.
