  • Disc no. 18 (ca. 47 min.). Introduction of panelists by Sommer as moderator; Dixon-Stowell (ca. 9 min.) speaks about the manner in which African American dance forms have reappeared in social dancing in the United States; the restricted performance opportunities and venues within which African American dancers developed their careers; and [using slides as a visual aid] the dance team of Norton and Webb; Sommer speaks briefly with Hillman about his career [demonstration by Hillman of soft-shoe dancing; calling to podium of Fabel (Jorge Pabon)]; Banes (ca. 16 min.) speaks about the dance form known as "breaking" (also known as "rocking") and its development in the 1980s from a type of street or social dancing to a professional form seen in theaters, clubs, films, and television. [Disc no. 18 ends abruptly in middle of Banes's lecture, which continues on disc no. 19.]

Sound quality: The cassettes from which the Dance Black America festival were preserved contain gaps, abrupt starts and stops, unrelated material, and material that is out of sequence. In addition, the audibility, especially of questions taken from the audience, is often poor.
