- Colby speaks about her life and career as a dancer, the owner/manager of a small arts management company, and a mother; describes her early ballet training in Connecticut and San Francisco followed by training in modern dance and ballet at the University of California at Irvine and the Juilliard School in New York City; the limitations imposed by her body type and the competitiveness of the dance world; discusses gender disparities including Colby's experience with the José Limón Dance Company; Colby's free lance dancing, including work with Elizabeth Streb, Sara Rudner, Ann Carlson, and Sean Curran; relationship of her gender and motherhood to her dancing; Colby's feelings regarding how her work as a dancer and as an arts manager is valued; discusses differences in self-confidence of male and female artists; the constant tensions in being a dancer, an arts manager, and a mother and wife; the tendency of women to multitask; differences in managing male and female artists; and Colby's concern and efforts regarding the improving of working conditions and opportunities for contemporary dance artists.
