Summary
Entrant in the Dance on Camera Festival 2002. Portrait of Anita Velez (also called Anita Velez-Mitchell), a dancer, singer, actor, playwright, poet, and director. Her story, which spans California, New York City, and Puerto Rico, is told partly in her own words and partly in those of her daughters Jane Velez-Mitchell (a television anchor and the maker of this film) and Gloria Vando Hickok (a poet) ; her grandchildren Paul Peress (a drummer), Lorca Peress (an actor), and Anika Peress (a singer and songwriter) ; and her former theatrical agent Charles Conaway. Her continuing zest for life, creativity, and legacy of artistic activity are portrayed, as well as some darker aspects of her life. In addition to present-day footage of Anita Velez dancing and singing, the film includes many still photographs of her vaudeville career in the 1940s and archival footage of dancers and other performers of her time.
