- Biography
- Ewart Guinier, labor leader, social activist, and educator, was born in Panama, to Jamaican parents, in 1910. After migrating to Boston in 1925, and moving to New York in the 1930s, Guinier emerged as a labor and social activist when he helped to organize efforts to improve conditions for blacks working in New York City's civil service system. He later became the International Secretary of the United Public Workers of America in 1948; ran as the American Labor Party candidate for Manhattan Borough President in 1949; was co-founder of the National Negro Labor Council in the 1950s; and worked with the National Urban League, the Harlem Affairs Committee and the Jamaica Coordinating Council during the 1950s and 1960s. He served as the first chairman of the Afro-American Studies Department at Harvard University from 1969 to 1976, and remained on faculty until his retirement in 1980. Guinier, who is also the father of attorney/educator Lani Guinier, died in 1990.
