Summary
Diane Gray introduces the speaker, Martha Hill, and describes her legacy in modern dance overall and at Bennington College, New York University, and the Juilliard School. Hill speaks about her beginnings as a ballet student; her musical training; her teachers, Martha Graham in particular; teaching at the University of Oregon; dancing in Martha Graham's dance company; Louis Horst; the different studios where she took classes and rehearsed with Graham; teaching at Bennington College, the first dance program there, and the collaborations that resulted. [Film on Bennington dance program is shown.] Hill describes the development and evolution of Graham's class and technique over fifty years, especially as it was influenced by the ideas of Mary Wigman; Hill's thoughts on the future development of dance styles. Question and answer session.
