Subject
  • Privileges and immunities, Ecclesiastical > France > Early works to 1800
  • Clergy > Taxation > France > Early works to 1800
  • Church and state > France > Early works to 1800
  • France > Politics and government > 1715-1774
Note
  • By Voltaire. Cf. Barbier, A.A. Ouvrages anonymes, IV, col. 1051.
  • Williams distinguishes 3 octavo editions with t.p. and collation as above (LV50, LV50A, LV50C) on basis of t.p. ornaments and other "slight differences in the title page." Of these, only LV50C (= BN copy shelfmarked LD⁴. 2312A) has accent in "Sincére," represented by an apostrophe following the letter; periods follow "peuple" and the date; commas follow "Sincére" and "Amsterdam"; date is represented as "M.DCC.L."
  • NYPL copy has accent in "Sincére," but differs slightly from description in Williams LV50C: On t.p., a period, rather than a comma, follows "Sincére"; date appears as "M. DCC. L."
  • Williams describes LV50C as "a reprint of LV50," which he calls "the first edition printed in Paris in late May/early June 1750."
  • BN distinguishes 2 octavo editions with t.p. and collation as above (nos. 3815-3817=Williams LV50; no. 3818=Williams LV50A) on basis of t.p. ornament and other ornaments. BN no. 3820, representing copy shelfmarked LD⁴. 2312A and therefore corresponding to Williams LV50C, is described as "un autre ex." of no. 3819, a duodecimo ed. presumably printed in Rouen (=Williams LV50B); the entries are combined in the current BN catalog (record no. FRBNF31605034).
  • Bengesco describes BN copy shelfmarked LD⁴. 2312A as a "contrefaçon de l'édition précédente," i.e. BN copy shelfmarked LD⁴. 2312 (BN no. 3818=Williams LV50A).
  • Condemned by the Court of Rome, Jan. 25, 1751, and by royal decree delivered by the Conseil des dépêches, May 21, 1751. Cf. Bengesco; introd. by Williams to critical ed. in Voltaire. Works, 1968-, v. 32A, p. 224.
  • Signatures: A⁸. $4 signed, arabic; page catchwords.
  • Type flower t.p. ornament and headpiece.
  • In NYPL copy, t.p. ornament is composed of a lozenge of fleurons enclosing a square of smaller fleurons; headpiece of 2 rows of 6 fleurons each (fleurons as in t.p. lozenge). Vertical chain lines; watermark unclear, but portions visible at top of each page.
