Summary
In conjunction with UKwithNY, "a series of free public programs celebrating the dynamic and diverse performing arts of the United Kingdom," British-born choreographer Christopher Wheeldon discusses his prior career as a dancer with the Royal Ballet, his move to New York City to dance with the New York City Ballet at the invitation of artistic director Peter Martins, and his current work. Some topics include: his recent ballet Polyphonia, created for New York City Ballet ; the challenges of following in George Balanchine's footsteps as a choreographer ; dancing for Jerome Robbins ; Wheeldon's attraction to the concept of the total art work, exemplified in his production of Firebird for the Boston Ballet ; how funding and audience expectations can affect a choreographer's output ; differences in approach between the Royal Ballet and New York City Ballet ; his decision to retire from performing in order to devote his time to choreography. A question-and-answer session concludes the evening.
