Summary
Documentary on the Shipyard project, inspired by the threatened closure of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, N.H. The project, which began in January 1995, was a two-year residency by the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange which culminated in a week-long series of events, including site-specific performances combining dance, new music, and storytelling. Centering on the shipyard, it drew in the members of the wider community, who became involved as creative collaborators and performers. Choreographer Liz Lerman viewed the project as an exploration of the role of the military in American life (exemplified by the relationship of the shipyard and the people who lived around it), and a means of encouraging community members to participate actively in art. Much of the project is described from the perspective of Charlie Lawrence, the shipyard resource manager, who discusses his own experiences as a performer in the project. The documentary depicts conversations with community members, whose reminiscences contributed to the project's text ; dance and music rehearsals involving people of various ages and occupations ; and excerpts from the final performances in 1996, which were held in various locations, and included a special performance for shipyard workers.
