Summary
The Foxtrot divertissement was choreographed in 1940 and added to Sir Frederick Ashton's ballet Façade, originally presented in 1931 by the Camargo Society. Leslie Edwards, who first danced the ballet in the 1930s with the Sadler's Wells Ballet, rehearses four student dancers in the divertissement, refining their movements and giving them pointers about characterization. During the rehearsal and in an interview, he describes the Camargo Society's production, and discusses some of Ashton's sources of inspiration for the divertissement: the foxtrot, the Charleston, and other dances ; the musical Good news ; the persona of comedian Harold Lloyd.
