Summary
After a brief introduction by choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh, her dance work Making maps (ca. 33 min.) is performed in full. Jeyasingh then returns for a 20-min. discussion that covers: Introduction to the dance style Bharatha natyam -- The relationship between the music and the dance (with Alistair MacDonald) -- Analysis of sections of the dance. Jeyasingh talks about her starting point, the medieval Mappa Mundi, and her intention of creating a metaphorical "map" reflecting the experiences of an Indian dancer in Britain. She describes the objective qualities of Bharata natyam, which make it a classical dance form that can be utilized outside its cultural context. She and Alistair MacDonald discuss their collaboration as choreographer and composer.
