- Summary
- Sage Cowles and Mary Hinkson, both of whom studied dance with Margaret H'Doubler at the University of Wisconsin and performed with the Wisconsin Dance Group, look back on their dance careers. Cowles recalls studying at the School of American Ballet in New York City, where she first befriended Merce Cunningham, of whom she became a lifelong supporter. She discusses performing in the Broadway musical Bless you all (choreographed by Helen Tamiris) ; her longtime interest in mind-body disciplines ; teaching dance to non-dancers ; collaborating with filmmaker Molly Davis on Small circles great planes and Sage time and again, an excerpt of which is screened. She also discusses performing in Bill T. Jones's The last supper at Uncle Tom's cabin/The promised land (seen in film clips). Recalling her years as a member of the Martha Graham Dance Company, Hinkson describes some of the works she performed: Canticle for innocent comedians ; Circe, which Graham created for her ; Part real - part dream ; Cave of the heart, in which she danced the leading role of Medea ; and Seraphic dialogue (an excerpt of which is screened). She also recalls auditioning for and dancing in George Balanchine's The figure in the carpet. Hinkson discusses Graham's attitude toward race: her use of a fully integrated company, and her refusal to typecast people of color in "exotic" roles. A question-and-answer session concludes the program.
