Feature presentation (c2000 ; ca. 122 min.) / includes a 5-min. introduction. Abridged version of a re-creation of a Chinese opera of the Ming Dynasty, based on a play by 16th-century dramatist Tang Xianzu (1550-1616). The work, which is in the Kunju opera style, combines singing, recitation, dancing, acrobatics, stilt-walking, martial arts, female impersonation, and puppetry. Its central plot depicts the love story of the beautiful Du Liniang and the scholar Liu Mengmei. Voiceover narration in English clarifies key points in the action.
A Chinese cracker: the making of The peony pavilion in Shanghai, New York and Paris (c2000 ; ca. 52 min.) / produced by RM Associates in association with SBS TV ; written and directed by Derek Bailey ; China and U.S. sequences directed by Bill Shebar. Interviewees: Chen Shi-Zheng, Zhou Ming, Wen Yuhang, Qian Yi. Documentary on the re-creation of the opera, much of it related by its director Chen Shi-Zheng. The program opens with a plot synopsis ; a description of the production's beginnings in China ; background material on the work's 16th-century origins and its playwright Tang Xianzu (1550-1616) ; a discussion by music director Zhou Ming of the score, notated in 1792 by Ye Tang. After the production's cancellation in 1998, which was forced by political objections from the Shanghai government, Chen is seen starting anew at Jacob's Pillow, and discussing the lack of creative freedom in 20th-century China. The program explains the special characteristics of the Kunju style, and the traditional Chinese theatrical elements that were incorporated into the production. Also included are brief biographies of Chen and the principal performers, and interviews with Wen Yuhang and Qian Yi, who play the romantic leads. The program closes with scenes from the opera's triumphal performances in New York and Paris in 1999.
