Summary
Documentary on the celebration of Eka Dasa Rudra, or the Festival of Eleven Powers, a major Balinese religious event intended to cleanse the earth of evil and restore balance to the universe. The program depicts the many preparatory rituals leading to the main ceremony, on this occasion held on the last day of the Balinese century. Among them are a procession to the sea with effigies of the dead ; the conveyance of holy water from various springs to Denpasar, the capital of Bali ; a procession bearing statues of the gods to the sea for purification and back to their specially constructed shrines in Besakih ; sacrifices to the five elements, the most important of which takes place on the volcano Gunung Agung ; animal sacrifices and the final ritual at Besakih. Dancers, singers, and actors are occasionally glimpsed as part of the rituals.
