The life and career of Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), artist, playwright, poet, and film director, is examined through a combination of photographs, film clips, narration, and excerpts from his work in various media. Cocteau also speaks of his friends and associates, including Pablo Picasso, Erik Satie, Serge Diaghilev, Waslaw Nijinsky, Igor Stravinsky, Jean Renoir, Raymond Radiguet, and Jean Marais, some of whom are seen in archival footage.
