Summary
Report on a two-week residency by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in Kansas City, Mo. The residency, which was the first part of a three-year pilot project, was hoped to be the first step towards establishing Kansas City as a second home for the Ailey company. This program begins with an in-studio interview with Allan Gray, founder of the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey, who discusses the project and Ailey's new dance work to the music of Charlie Parker [For Bird - with love], which was to premiere in Kansas City. The program then documents the company's arrival in Kansas City, with interviews at the airport with Ailey and leading dancer Donna Wood. The scene moves to a welcome reception given for the company, at which Ailey and City Councilwoman Joanne Collins give brief speeches. The dancers introduce themselves at the podium, and choreographer Donald McKayle is introduced by Ailey. The program closes with rehearsal footage of the dancers.
