Summary
After a montage of performance excerpts by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Alvin Ailey, speaking from New York City, is interviewed via satellite by various individuals in the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo and Salvador da Bahia. In response to their questions, he discusses his training with Lester Horton and the enduring example he set; the origins of his company; how his work reflects the black heritage and experience; his admiration for Brazilian culture; the growth of dance in the U.S. since the 1960s; his choreographic approach; finding inspiration for his dance works in individual dancers, such as Judith Jamison; how the repertory system benefits both choreographers and dancers; Duke Ellington as influence and inspiration; his dream of founding a children's dance theater; how an urban company can retain a sense of its roots; his belief that Bahia's rich culture can foster a new dance form; his company's current activities, including plans for a retrospective of Katherine Dunham's works; how his school encourages young choreographers and develops new dancers.
