In response to their questions, he discusses his training with Lester Horton and the enduring example he set; the origins of his company; how his work reflects the black heritage and experience; his admiration for Brazilian culture; the growth of dance in the U.S. since the 1960s; his choreographic approach; finding inspiration for his dance works in individual dancers, such as Judith Jamison; how the repertory system benefits both choreographers and dancers; Duke Ellington as influence and inspiration; his dream of founding a children's dance theater; how an urban company can retain a sense of its roots; his belief that Bahia's rich culture can foster a new dance form; his company's current activities, including plans for a retrospective of Katherine Dunham's works; how his school encourages young choreographers and develops new dancers.
