Note
  • "My essay examines the circulation of movement from India to a larger cultural territory. In considering discussions between traditionalists and modernists, I examine the history of the dance in its ever-changing forms and the ability of contemporary choreographers to use the traditional gestures to communicate to audiences through works of their own. I argue that specific structural elements allow dancers to change the form to suit new spaces and issues without losing the classicism of the dance itself, citing choreographers such as Shobana Jeyasingh and Uday Shankar."--p. 119.
