- One of five articles that began as a panel at Dancing in the Millennium, a joint conference held July 2000 in Washington, D.C. Garafola discusses foundation support for dance, particularly the Rockefeller Foundation's 1953 grant for $200,000 to City Center in New York City, then under the direction of Lincoln Kirstein and home of New York City Ballet and New York City Opera. Also discussed is Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the roles played by Kirstein and John D. Rockefeller 3d in its creation.
