- One of five articles that began as a panel at Dancing in the Millennium, a joint conference held July 2000 in Washington, D.C. Discusses the history of the Kitchen Center for Video, Music, Dance, Performance, Film, and Literature in New York City, evolving from an informal artists' space in the early 1970's to a major Soho arts presenter. Director Elise Bernhardt emphasizes the Kitchen's role as a local cultural center with broad audience appeal and the Dancing in the Kitchen series as part of New York City's downtown-dance world. Also discusses programming by the Kitchen's first dance director Eric Bogosian; subsequent dance directors and their programming; political and artistic shifts that influenced development and programming; and the Kitchen's current varied dance programming.
