Description

Summary
Last half of a 130-min. documentary on the Bolshoi Ballet, past and present. The most prominent interviewee is Yuri Grigorovich, then the company's artistic director and chief choreographer, who discusses his artistic goals and intentions for the company. A recurring topic among the interviewees, who include leading dancers of the past and present, is the interpretation of dance roles both in contemporary and classical ballets. In discussing his ballets Spartacus and Ivan the Terrible, Grigorovich compares the creators of the title roles (respectively Vladimir Vasiliev and Yuri Vladimirov) to the current interpreter, Irek Mukhamedov. Vasiliev and Ekaterina Maximova discuss their partnership and the evolution of their roles in the ballet Giselle. Maya Plisetskaya discusses communication and expressiveness in dance with reference to her ballets Anna Karenina and The sea gull, both based on literary sources. The documentary concludes by spotlighting the young stars Nina Ananiashvili and Andris Liepa as they prepare and present their first performance in the leading roles in Giselle on April 2, 1986.
