Description
1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (103 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in. (VHS)
Summary
Rehearsing in what appears to be a hotel banquet room, Rudolf Nureyev conducts Igor Stravinsky's ballet Apollo (also called Apollon musagète). The recording begins toward the end of the music for the pas de deux, and continues to the close of the ballet (ca. 12 min.). Nureyev then works intensively on the coda for the next 9 min. At 27 min. the rehearsal begins da capo, continuing for 35 min. with some interruptions and repetitions, until the end of Apollo's second variation. A publicity session begins at 62 min., and photographers and sound recordists are much in evidence for about 14 min. while Nureyev and the orchestra continue to play sections of the score. The cameras gradually become less intrusive. At 85 min., the orchestra plays a brief excerpt of the waltz from Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky's Serenade in C for string orchestra, Op. 48. The rehearsal of Apollo resumes at 87 min., but at 101 min. the tape abruptly cuts to the waltz from Serenade. This tape contains no dance content.
