Jerome Robbins and other participants discuss the meaning and history of the tea ceremony with one of the teachers. The teacher relates several Japanese stories to illustrate points, and Robbins and the teacher discuss the role of the tea ceremony in Japanese society; the differences between Japanese and American attitudes towards nature and beauty; and conflicts within Japanese culture between traditional and contemporary ways of life.
