Summary
Excerpts from a ballet based on Molière's comedy of the same title, set to music by Richard Strauss. This recording focuses mainly on the sections danced by Rudolf Nureyev in the principal role of Cléonte, including his assumption of various disguises and his pas de deux with Lucile. The divertissement performed by a couple and ensemble of six women appears at the end of the recording rather than in its correct position preceding the pas de deux. The dancers may be members of the Ballet de l'Opéra de Paris (which acquired the ballet in 1979) or the Ballett des Opernhauses, Zürich (1980); both companies wore costumes designed by Bernard Daydé. The settings that appear in this recording are rather minimal in comparison to the elaborate settings shown in Antenne 2's 1985 recording of the Paris Opéra Ballet production (see *MGZIC 9-1915 Le bourgeois gentilhomme).
