In addition to live performances, it includes narrated biographical segments with documentary footage; films clips of Irving Berlin performing God bless America and Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning; sound clips of Berlin speaking and singing; a film clip of an interview with Jerome Robbins about his choreographic work on Call me madam; a film clip of members of the United States Senate and House of Representatives singing Happy birthday to you on the Capitol steps; film clips from the motion pictures Annie get your gun, The jazz singer, Follow the fleet, Easter parade, There's no business like show business, Blue skies, White Christmas, Call me madam, and Top hat. These clips feature performances by Mary Martin, Ethel Merman, Al Jolson, Ginger Rogers, Fred Astaire, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby, and Rosemary Clooney. Two African-American World War II veterans who appeared in the musical comedy This is the Army speak about their memories of the show.
