Summary
Documentary on Emile Jaques-Dalcroze and his system of movement and music training, Dalcroze Eurhythmics. The program examines his aims and philosophy, with reminiscences of his teaching style from his former student Edith Naef. Scenes from a 1999 workshop led by Karin Greenhead, an internationally recognized Dalcroze teacher, provide a practical demonstration of his ideas, as do briefer glimpses of classes for various age groups. The program traces the course of his career, particularly his collaboration with theater director Alfred Appia, and the history of his schools. A discussion of his influence on modern dance of the early 20th century is illustrated by film clips of Doris Humphrey (a student of Dalcroze teacher Elsa Findlay), Mary Wigman, Rosalia Chladek and others. The program also examines how the gymnastic element of Dalcroze training, adapted by Rudolf Bode in his exercise system, was reflected in the Nazis' cult of the physical ideal. The dissemination of his work in Europe and abroad, the continuation of his institute in Geneva, and the multiple applications of the training prove the lasting validity and vitality of Dalcroze's innovations.
