- Description
- 1 videocassette (VHS, NTSC) (37 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- Recorded at a Baroque Ballet Workshop led by Catherine Turocy at the Jarvis Conservatory, this video examines the dancers' process of leaving behind the present day and entering into the world of 18th century dance. The discussion explores the differences between Baroque dancing and classical ballet; the concept of the "Baroque bubble"; the role of poetry in Baroque dancing; the transforming influences of masks, costumes, wigs, and make-up; creating a dramatic character; acquiring associated skills such as fencing and playing castanets; discerning the deeper significance of Baroque choreography; studying dance notation of the period. Footage of classes and rehearsals are interspersed with performance excerpts from the workshop's 1998 production of With sword drawn he dances (for a complete recording of this work, see *MGZIA 4-3296 With sword drawn he dances).
