- Jerome Robbins discusses his early career and influences, including choreographer Senia Gluck-Sandor, dancing in Broadway choruses and collaborating with Leonard Bernstein on their ballet Fancy free (1944); the influences for his ballet, Dances at a gathering (1969); inspiration versus hard work; the significance of music, specifically Bach's Goldberg variations in his choreography; the discipline of New York City Ballet dancers; his creative process; the formation of his company, Ballets: U.S.A. in 1958 and the recruitment of dancers; his ballet, Moves (1959) as performed by various dance companies [pause]; his work as director and choreographer on various Hollywood films; his idea for the show West Side story (1957) based on Romeo and Juliet [pause]; working with dancers Mikhail Baryshnikov and Natalia Makarova in the ballet Other dances (1976); his interest in the music of Frederic Chopin; his dislike of theorizing about his work.
