[Begins abruptly; recording contains intermittent telephone ringing.] In an interview concerning his ballet Fancy free (1944), Jerome Robbins discusses his early creation of dances at Camp Tamiment; writing the scenario of Fancy free for Ballet Theatre and how it came to be produced; the background of his creation of Fancy free with American themes and dance forms; the influence of World War II on the ballet; choosing Leonard Bernstein to write the score and their long-distance collaboration; the difficulty of touring during World War II with Ballet Theatre; opening night of Fancy free and his shock at the audience reaction to it; more on his collaboration with Bernstein and with set designer Oliver Smith; his attitude towards working on the ballet despite the obstacles; the original cast of the ballet.
